Where Do I Belong

Where Do I Belong
Camp for children of divorce

belongBefore reading more about this camp I invite you to look at our general youth philosophy. All our camps carry this basic theme and then offer a focus. This particular focus is for children of divorce.

I struggled to write this introductory paragraph. Everything I started with sounded cheesy.

So I am going to cut to the chase. Divorce is no longer the exception rather it is becoming the rule. These children, your children, can benefit deeply from outside support and a safe place to ask questions and have conversations that might be too intimidating to have with their parents. If given this opportunity they can find their voice and THEN find ways to have those conversations with them. The truth is many of them don’t want to hurt their parents so they are careful with their words. Or hateful. That happens too. Regardless . . .it is wise to not underestimate the power of community and support. Children of divorce navigate through the world differently because of how they grow up. It is very common for children of divorce to feel some sense of responsibility, no matter how much or how often you tell them it is not so.

This camp is an opportunity for your child to form a healthy community in which they can have safe conversations and ask questions. They will spend time with other kids who come from divorce.

Children of divorce do a lot of measuring:

  • Emotions
  • Stress levels
  • Attention
  • Loyalties
  • Time
  • Money
  • Love
  • Value

All this measuring can be exhausting. And confusing.

Your child will leave this camp:

  • Feeling less alone
  • With new communication strategies to have conversations with their parents
  • A little less burdened by the self imposed responsibility of the divorce
  • A new community of peers from similar situations
  • A deeper sense of self and heightened confidence
  • A better understand of boundaries and how to set them
  • Feeling heard

What we do:
We will be spending the day with our herd of 8 fabulous horses and all the other critters who have found their way to Dandelion Farm. We will be engaging with them in fun and unique ways. Our day will be spent outdoors or in our brand new arena. Dandelion Farm has many opportunities to learn about our selves and the world we live in. We often use art and music to supplement our camp days. Each child will receive one on one support from staff and myself throughout the day.
